Origin in Tribal Traditions. The family trees or genealogies in Gen 1–11 belong to a many-faceted genre that runs through the whole of the Old Testament. This genre is found in a highly developed form in the patriarchal cycle, Gen 12–50, and occurs again only with the kings, the priests and priestly circle, and with the chronicler.
